Well on Saturday January 21st the2012 AVN Awards, also called the “Oscars of Porn”, and needless to say there were some shockers and some not so shockers. You can the full list of winners here and below are my thoughts on some of the wins.

Portrait of a Call Girl: If you read our review, which you can see here, you know how much we thought of the title overall. We thought it could have used more variety on the scenes, namely the inclusion of another girl in a scene or two. Anyway, the movie ended up winning multiple awards, including a Best Actress for the star, Jessie Andrews and the Best Feature award.

The Rocki Whore Picture Show: A Hardcore Parody: This was another one of our favorite movies to come out this year (see the review here). This movie really shows how you can make a parody correctly. If my count was correct then this was the big winner of the night with a total of eight awards. Granted they were mostly for behind the scenes things like marketing, DVD extras, direction and screenplay but that is really just an indication of a good film.

Bobbi Starr: Bobbi is a great performer and on top of winning some scene awards and best porn star website, she also won the prestigious Performer of the Year award. This was the biggest shock to me, though not because she didn’t deserve because she did. The reason it was a shock was because I thought Asa Akira had this one in the bag, especially considering how her year ended last year and the mostly positive reviews for Insatiable 2, which one a bunch of awards for her this year.

Ron Jeremy: Ron won the Crossover Star of the Year award. This was a surprise as well but the reason is because no guy has ever won this award before. It’s always a joy seeing Ron win an award too. The guy is a legend and because he doesn’t shoot that often he doesn’t get a lot of nominations.

Now for some shout outs because a bunch of my friends won some awards and I wanted to send out some huge congrats.

jessica drake was recognized for her educational DVD jessica drake’s Guide to Wicked Sex: Fellatio. This particular title didn’t help me out a ton, it was still well made.

Jacky St. James ended up winning for her screenplay of Dear Abby, which she also won at Xbiz, and after seeing some of the other movies she wrote, I have a feeling this will be the first of many.

Kay Brandt and the people over at Jewelbox Films ended up walking away with a couple of awards as well, including the Best Girl/Girl Release for Cherry 2.

My home girl India Summer won the MILF/Cougar Performer of the Year making it a sweep with Xbiz as well.

Ariel Rebel, who I recently started to help out with PR, won the Best Solo Girl site for her personal site, ArielRebel.com.

I’m sure I missed some people so for those friends I will say “I’m sorry” and I will add you when I remember. Congrats to all the winners, again.

And we’re not talking about pornography! These three gorgeous gals are exploring the commodification of the body using only ink, paper, and their naked flesh, and if you help them fund this project, they’ll make you a small print of your very own!

With the help of critically-acclaimed artist Victor Wilde and a process called Contact Body Printing (they put ink on their bodies, then put their bodies on paper), they create one-of-a-kind images that quite literally show the point where porn impacts art. It’s like Yves Klein’s “Anthropometries” without the blue. Seems cool and simple, right? So why did they bother with Kickstarter?

They put this project on Kickstarter for a number of reasons. For one, the printing methods are expensive and messy, and Kickstarer provides a great way to get cash money from the community. Second—and more importantly—they want to open up discussion about what (if anything) separates adult material from art. “Does the artistic value of the work change because of the profession of the women creating it?” Dylan Ryan asks. That’s a damn good question, and the answers have far-reaching consequences!

If you think the answer is, “Yes, of course I would be more inclined to buy an ink impression of a woman’s body if that woman were a pornstar,” then you should consider donating to this project. You can give any amount, but only $25 gets you a small, personalized print from the girl and body part of your choice! Just think: you could have Dylan Ryan’s shoulder blade in your foyer, providing you with a great conversation piece and carte blanche to enjoy pornography as an intellectual study.

In all seriousness, we think this is a brilliant idea and we urge you to support them. They get to make art, you get to appreciate it, and we all learn a little something about how we perceive and consume the human form.

To donate money for this project go here.

ABSOLUTELY! Just because the culmination of our jobs includes someone inserting a penis into our bodies doesn’t mean we don’t need to encourage a new environment that is both professional and respectful. Too long have we allowed the degradation of this industry into a form that almost rewards those who are flaky, late, strung out, or just all around unprofessional. Let’s all begin the long process to bring back some decency here folks, or seriously, we’re not going to have an industry to work in.You’re thinking there’s no way right?

Well if you’re that big of a pessimist to think nothing will ever change, please stop reading now. No one said it was going to be easy, EVERY single day I hear horror stories of girls showing flaking, either with a lame excuse, or sometimes no excuse at all, they just don’t show. And when they do, well, you all have heard the stories too, the talent will be strung out, or uninterested in working, or maybe just, and it’s sad that this is on the lower end of the spectrum, just not as good looking as in pictures. So what do we do about it? Well we band together and stop this Middle/High School popularity contest we have, and begin sharing work and information. I know if you’re Girl A and you go out the night before with Girl B, you all have a good time, get hammered, maybe even a little recreational drug use, that’s fine, but girls, that’s PERSONAL. The next day a director asks you who you want to work with, I know you like that girl and all, but she is more than likely NOT the best fit to WORK with. Yes, there’s a difference in WORK and PLAY. So you tell the director you want to work with Girl B, and guess what, your shoot day comes and she doesn’t show up, guess what, you don’t work either, kind of hard to do a girl/girl shoot with just one girl. But let’s say she does show up, well, she got wasted the night before and now she looks like shit, and if she looks like shit, guess how your girl/girl scene is gonna look? So yeah, you’re friends with her and you got her work, but at what cost? That scene will be out there forever, and it’s not going to look any better as time passes. I know as much as I like, PERSONALLY, any girl out here, I am NOT going to recommend her for a scene that will make me look bad! PERIOD! No exceptions.

This is just the first step in a long marathon we must all run, and it won’t be easy, bucking the trend never is, but if we change the industry together, even if it takes 20 years, that’ll be more to show than any number of scenes or awards you can obtain. I know personally, I would rather leave a legacy than a mantle full of any awards.

The next step is unclear, but a couple weeks ago, I tried to get others who do believe we can change the industry together, and vowed to form a professional association (which some have likened to a sorority or fraternity within porn). With this association, we can all share our thoughts and ideas on just how to make this difference. Many great ideas have already been thrown out, and I’m in the process right now of instituting some of them. The first great idea was a review system that includes a mediation board. The days of spewing unfounded rumors on twitter should be behind us, I mean come on people, our FANS are on twitter, that should be a place to interact with fans, and share POSITIVE thoughts, no air everyone’s dirty laundry. Let’s create a new place where if Talent A has a PROFESSIONAL problem with Talent B, they can bring that to the attention of the board, and FACTS can be gathered. Not this current situation where if Talent A has a PERSONAL problem with Talent B, they start bad mouthing them with terms like trashy, skanky, etc. These are all words which describe a personal problem you have with someone which should have no bearing on the workplace, I know you may not like some other girl cause you think she “looked at your man the wrong way”, but honey you still need to work with her, don’t let the popularity contest continue by saying, “well I’m more popular, so I’m going to tell the director either she leaves or I do, and I know he’ll make her leave because I’m more popular”, not, why do we allow that as a community to happen?

To conclude on a topic I could talk about for days, this is just the beginning. This is also the best time to join the association, your ideas and thoughts WILL be heard and you have a real chance at making a difference. So where do you go to find more information, well the first stop should be www.ForPorn.org/blog , this is where upcoming meeting notifications will be posted, and all official Adult Industry Performer Association (also known as the Fraternal Order of Pornographers) news can be found. Stop in today and be part of the solution, not the problem.
