Dr. Lori Beth Bisbey is sharing fresh insight into the changing sexual landscape for adults over 50, pointing to a growing openness around pleasure, menopause, later-life intimacy and conversations that were far less common just a few years ago.
The clinical psychologist, accredited advanced GSRD therapist and sex/intimacy coach identifies a clear shift in both public conversation and private practice. “Trend is for people to talk about pleasure, discuss issues relating to menopause and beyond, to talk about changes for men post-50 and to expect to be sexually active throughout adult life,” she said.
She also pointed to “women advocating for their pleasure and for the hormonal help they need to be able to enjoy their sexuality” and “people talking about sexual alternatives like non-monogamy and kink without shame.”
Bisbey also highlighted a striking development in later-life sexual health, noting, “Observation relating to the increase in STIs in the over 65’s is that more over 65’s are engaging in sexual activity and specifically in casual sex than ever before. This is great news (though the infection rate is not).” She added, “I am consulted more by over 60’s than I was 10 year ago – many of whom are embracing their desires for the first time openly and seeking partners to share them with.”
