Long known—even by those who have never taken a cruise—as a discreet symbol of the openness some guests have to what one might politely call “casual” onboard canoodling, the upside-down pineapple decoration, seen on plenty of cruise ship cabin doors, is now being banned by Carnival Cruise Lines. The company issued a statement just recently, in part saying that the pineapple stickers etc. are, “…definitely no longer allowed on the ships and they will be removed from any cabin door.”
This emphatic policy statement came after a cruise guest wondered about the cruise line possibly adding a single meetup on the Carnival Hub app. During that online discussion someone suggested that the oft-used inverted fruit universally known for hooking up, be added to the app…then let the fun ensue.
Carnival responded.
It seems Carnival wants to maintain the illusion that they are most interested in family-friendly vacationing on the high seas. And to be sure, cruise ships are shared public spaces, there is a certain level of decorum that guests should maintain, even if it is simply flirting with one another to make an in-cabin rendezvous happen. Carnival also assured guests, that have they a desire to decorate their cabin door there a plenty of ship-sanctioned decorations on hand that don’t secretly reveal any salacious welcome.
As we always have, when a spiked libido or even a potential interest in something naughty takes us, we do find a way to facilitate our needs. For those persons who live their cruise life looking for a certain type of adventuring that goes beyond a midnight buffet, gambling in international waters, or feel-good cover band concerts, surely other symbols will soon be found to replace the upside-down pineapple. Considering all this began over a discussion about the Carnival Cruise Lines app, given the constant intersecting of modern technology and sex, a new way in, so to speak, will probably come from some crafty cruiser creating something via a post, APP or TikTok aside that soon becomes the norm for those looking to get together on a cruise.
See you on the choppy waters.
