Life After Promiscuity: A BDSM Love Story

There was a time when San Fransico was one of the undisputed meccas for kink. From the deep 70s well into the 90s, this was a city on par with Berlin and London where the dyed-in-the-leather lifestyler and budding kinkster both could find whatever it was they wanted when it came to BDSM. Dorothy Freed finds such delights in that city-by-the-bay in her story of a divorced mom coming into her kinkdom in Life After Promiscuity: A BDSM Love Story.

The narrator here pulls no punches from the very start, as one would surely hope in a book about this particular subject of sexual self-discovery. It’s obvious Freed surely knows of what she speaks as with even a cursory read of a novel or short story with BDSM at its core (which this book is), one can usually tell when the author is a true devotee or just someone letting their fantasies spill across the page having had no experience with a lash or cuffs.

The true ring here of a sub relating her life gives this story the real meat-on-the-bone a reader of this kind of material always craves. And as Freed says, “The clit never lies,” with her loins prompting her ever onward to explore all manner of whippings, exposure, her sir’s penchant for what she calls “public eroticism,” orgasm denial, and plugging, to name just some stuff she and her man get into.

Name-dropping the people and places of San Francisco at the time—the infamous Society of Janus, the Cannery at San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf, and plenty of other spots—the city comes across as much a character as many of the people we meet along the way. This makes Life After Promiscuity: A BDSM Love Story especially fun for me, a fan of the foggy seaside city as I am.

If I have one criticism of this 138-pager, I’d say I would have liked a little more about the couple beyond all the sexcapades, as hot as the telling of those are. Just a little indication of who these two people were beyond their kinks would have been nice…but then, again, maybe that is the point of Freed’s book.
